Are you getting the 3 red light error that is, the red ring of death? If so, don’t immediately assume that you have a damaged console. You may be having difficulties with getting enough or no power at all to your machine.
This problem is very easy to deal with and it needs to be ruled out before you even think about repair. Too much heat is the usual reason for the ring of death. But unless it is very obvious that you have a heat problem, adequate power supply is the first issue to check out.
The first step is starting with the 110 AC power outlet in your wall. You could have had a temporary power brownout to your house. This power interruption will definitely cause problems with your console.
If such is the case, the console will operate just fine after a restart. If not, look at the power supply light located on the box on the power cord.
If there’s a green light, you have plenty of power so the ring of death is not power related. If this is the case, you can stop reading this article because I will only talk of power related issues.
If you see a red or orange light or no light at all, then inadequate power supply is the problem. There are a number of reasons:
1.) The outlet in your room is to blame.
Plug your console into a different outlet in another room.
2.) You’ve got a faulty power strip or defective surge protector.
These can be bypassed by plugging the power cord directly into the wall outlet.
3.) The power supply cables are loosely connected.
Disconnect and reconnect all power cable connections starting at the console and then working your way to the wall outlet.
4.) The power supply cables are damaged.
Inspect and replace all cables that have been damaged.
5.) Your power brick is running too hot.
The power brick is not getting the ventilation necessary for adequate cooling. Place it on a hard surface or hang it from a hook.
6.) The power brick is defective.
Borrow a power brick from your friend or try using one of your own spares. If that solves the problem, then your original power brick was faulty.
This article gave a comprehensive trouble shooting list for dealing with a red ring of death that’s due to insufficient power supply. If your problem was solved, you’re lucky, because the other reasons for the ring of death will not be so easy to fix.
