Though businesses are constantly told about the importance of workplace security, far too few of them actually take the steps necessary to make theirs as safe and secure as it should be. This not only puts employees at risk, but also leads to high insurance premiums. Some insurance companies will even refuse to pay out if they feel that a business has been negligent in relation to workplace security.
Having locks on their doors and windows is all that lots of businesses do as far as workplace security is concerned, but that is far from adequate. As well as having strong locks on your doors and windows, there are many other precautions that you should be taking, some physical and some training related. These are some of the workplace security precautions that you may want to consider…
- Monitor all entrances and exits with CCTV cameras.
- Install shutters that can be pulled down over windows and doors at the end of the working day.
- Hire a security guard to watch over the main entrance.
- Install a metal detector immediately in front of the door where members of the public enter the premises.
- Brief employees on steps to take if a threatening or violent incident arises.
- Install an under-the-counter alarm system which silently alerts security if an undesirable situation is arising.
- Place a plastic window on service counters if large amounts of cash are being dealt with.
- Position supervisor desk’s so that they can clearly see areas where employees are dealing with customers.
- Position the reception desk immediately inside the public entrance.
- Implement a code word system so that employees can secretly alert other employees if they feel threatened.
- Issue all employees with photo identification cards.
- Have visitors carry temporary passes with them for the duration of their stay on the premises.
- Position furniture and partitions so that access to high risk areas (such as where money is kept) is not visible to members of the public.
Your type of business and location will determine how many of the above you need to implement, but all businesses would benefit from following at least some of those precautions. Some of them will incur no costs at all, so you should implement those at an absolute minimum. If you are really serious about workplace security, then having your workplace reviewed by a security professional is advisable, as they will be able to make specific suggestions based on your business’s particular circumstances.
